Islam was introduced into Southeast Asia by Muslim traders from the Arab world, India and China from the 13th century. Islam is now the major religion in Indonesia and the national religion of Brunei and Malaysia. Indonesia, with a population of over 200 million, has the largest Muslim population in the world. Most believers adhere to Sunni Islam.

Adopted into Southeast Asia after Hinduism, Islam is considered as a religion that transcends the boundaries of caste and ethnic differences. Moreover, Islam also integrated several indigenous customs, Hindu and Buddhist features into its practices currently performed in marriage, funeral, and other ceremonies.
