Hinduism emerged in India around 800 B.C and entered Southeast Asia in the early A.D. This religion spread from Java to Bali around the 7th century. In the early 16th century, the Majapahit Hindu kingdom moved from Java to Bali.

Balinese Hindus believe in rebirth and practice cremation. Besides worshiping three major Hindu deities, Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer, Balinese Hindus also revere indigenous gods such as the gods of volcanoes, seas, and especially the rice goddess who was worshiped in temples. Each family has a special place to worship their ancestors and gods.
