The yoke thay thabin theater has existed since the 15th century. It reached its apogee in the 19th century.

Carved and dressed, wooden puppets are operated by 16-30 strings of hemps, which can give them the most varied and lissome movements and resemble dancing. Those representing evil beings enter the stage from the left side; kings, princes and princesses from the right side, and the alchemist from above. Viewers can see the handlers standing above the stage and the saing waiang orchestra that supports the performance.

The shows represent jataka, which are previous lives of Buddha, the myths of the "creation of the world" and legends.
