In Southeast Asia, jewelry making is an ancient art. Gold is widespread in the islands of Southeast Asia. On the continent, it is appreciated by the people of the plains while those who reside in mountainous areas mainly use silver.
the most widely-used technique is repousse, in which high-relief motifs are created on the outer side of the metal object by hammering from the inside. The technique of incision is applied to create designs on gold and silver jewelry. In some populations such as the Baba Nyonya (Malaysia) and the Peranakan (Singapore), fine wires made of gold and silver are wound or soldered into the patterns.
