INTRODUCTION

The house is modelled after the house of Mr. Trang A Lu, a Hani person in Lao Chai 1 hamlet, Y Ty commune, Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province. His house was built in 1988 in the traditional style. Mr. Lu is the sixth and also the youngest child of the family. He got married in 1986. Lu had his first child in 1987. His parents built the house for his core family to live in. He and his wife now have three children (who are all boys). All three unmarried sons still live with them. The left compartment will be given to the eldest son and his future wife. Lu will build houses for the younger sons' families to live in. "The house is the domicile of the husband and wife, children, grandchildren and also the place where our deceased ancestors, parents return. No matter where we go, what we do, the home is what we miss the most. Only after we have had a house can we feel able to focus on earning living. The most important thing in a man's life after getting married is to build a house" (Trang A Lu, 38, Lao Chai 1 hamlet, Y Ty, Bat Xat, Lao Cai).
